The Olympics aren't every year. He pretty much never had an offseason despite having chronic foot injuries because he always works out with the Chinese National team.

It's something I enjoy about our team.
The Chinese Market always ends up with good nicknames for the players IE Capela being the "Pancake King" and Ryan Anderson being the "Standing around mamba"
Yao was the reason I enjoyed watching basketball as a kid because HOLY SHIT HE'S HUGE and he was always super entertaining to watch.

As a NBA fan from China I gotta say Kobe/Lakers has a huge fan base in China but that’s nothing compare to the Rocket’s.

Rockets had a legit chance to beat the Lakers in this series, who went on the win the championship.
Lakers had a HELL of a time guarding Brooks, and if I recall correctly it went to a game 7 even without Yao.
Truly a somewhat weird "what could have been" moment as the Rockets were basically Yao + role players and not considered true contenders at the time.
火箭那一年真的很有机会在那轮系列赛击败湖人，后者随后还赢得了总冠军。

Fun fact: Yao Ming posted a career Defensive Rating that was 11th among all players in the three-point era with 400 games played. It was roughly tied with Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard, Kawhi Leonard, and Dikembe Mutombo.
During Yao's six prime seasons his team was a top five defensive team five times, and #8 the other time (when Yao missed 25 games).
He made zero all-defensive teams.
Vastly underappreciated part of his legacy. Those Rockets teams were mainly special because of defense, not the scoring of Yao and McGrady (which never led to a top ten offense).

They lost T-mac to injury in February of that year and Mutombo (who at that point was Yao's backup) to injury in the first round. Their entire squad if healthy would have probably won it all. Instead, two careers effectively ended in that playoffs (Mutombo was retiring anyway though).
Also worth noting that by 2009, McGrady was physically and emotionally worn down to a shell of his former self, but he was still a starter.

When he was at his best he was an offensive force, also one of the select few player who could consistently neutralize Shaq to a degree. (Not even Rodman could do consistently to a green Shaq)
On a fundamental level, Yao Ming is the most impressive big man of all time. The fundamentals together with that size is still unheard of.
七英尺六英寸的大个子，而且巅峰时期还有百分之九十的罚球命中率。
